The DMC – A Brave New Era

E-mail Print PDF

DMC is an institution. Since its inception, the DMC world DJ championships has been a turntable focused competition – but that’s finally all changing. DMC recognises that DJing isn’t just about turntables anymore, and Sally McLintock, DMC’s World Events Manager, tells us that when it comes to allowing controllers into the championships, “it’s up to the DJs, we go where they go – we’re open minded”.

New York City is certainly one of the event capitals of the world. With all of the family and corporate parties and events going on in, a lot of people find themselves needing to rent dj equipment in the NYC area. Since no one wants last minute stress when they're planning an event, it's important to know what to look for to make the experience smooth and hassle free. The next time you find yourself looking for a DJ equipment rental company in NYC, here are a few things to think about:

Does the company have experience with DJ equipment rentals or just sales?

Renting equipment is not the same as buying it. While some New York electronic stores may be willing to rent equipment, it's often a good idea to find a company that has a lot of experience in rentals. Why? A good rental company understands the needs of a event planner better than a company that is used to working predominantly with experienced DJs and music producers.

Can the company help with setup?

Renting DJ equipment isn't like renting a car. Not everyone knows exactly how to set it up and use it. When looking for a good NYC DJ equipment rental company, make sure that if you need help setting it up, that they'll be there for you.

If it's a just a speaker rental you're looking for, it may be easy enough, but when you add turntables, cables, microphones, and an amplifier into the mix, it might be a little more confusing.

Is pickup and delivery available?

New York City is a big place. And with traffic, bridges, and tunnels, it's not exactly the easiest place to get around. DJ equipment isn't exactly small or easy to transport either.

For all of these reasons, when you rent DJ equipment in NYC, it's good to know that the company you use can deliver and pickup the equipment for you if necessary. This can save you a lot of time and hassle, especially when the person delivering the equipment is available to help set it up.

Are a range of options available?

Every event is different. While some rentals are for huge outdoor events with hundreds of attendees, yours may be a small gathering requiring just simple equipment. Make sure that the rental company you deal with has flexible options that match your needs and your budget. There's nothing worse than renting less, or more, than you really need.

How dance label Crosstown Rebels bounced back

E-mail Print PDF

Hit three times by its distributors collapsing, Damian Lazarus's Crosstown Rebels label could have gone under. Instead they've just had their biggest year yet!

Independent record companies routinely have distribution problems, but few have had the kind of bum luck the electronic label Crosstown Rebels encountered in its first few years. Founded in 2003 by London by the producer-DJ Damian Lazarus, whose sets tend to lean toward the dark and mysterious (see his Fabric 54 mix from last year), Crosstown Rebels had just shipped a Supreme Bachelors 12" in 2003 when Ideal, the label's distributor, went into liquidation. "We were owed a few grand from the sales of those first three releases," Lazarus says today. "Maybe I should have read the signs then."

Allen & Heath Xone DB4

E-mail Print PDF

The Xone:DB4 is a truly ground-breaking mixer and by far the most advanced product that we have designed. Every feature has been meticulously researched with a view to offering DJs ultimate creativity.

Based on the iLive pro-touring FX system, we developed FX algorithms with BPM conscious parameters and tight spectral control, customised to perfectly fit the DJ environment. As the loops and FX are automatically synchronised to the tempo of the track, it is very easy to build some amazing grooves and soundscapes without problems of latency, low fidelity and the general hassle often associated with using software and laptops.

The icing on the cake is the flexible input matrix, where any audio source can be selected on any or all of the channels. Different processing can be applied to the same track on separate channels and you can fade between them, or a phrase sampled in the looper of one channel can be added to the mix later in the track. Our digital design team has done an incredible job to ensure that this is one of the most innovative and exciting DJ mix tools to date.

The heart of the Xone:DB4 is the powerful Quad FX Core DSP engine, enabling each channel to have its own FX bank and BPM detection system, which automatically adjusts all time-related FX and loops to the tempo of the music. There are 5 studio quality FX types optimised for DJ use - delays, reverbs, modulators, resonators and damage – plus each FX type has a patch library of different effect variations. Each FX bank has a dedicated expression control and a rotary pot to set the wet/dry level, whilst further tweaking can be performed using the global controllers in the FX master section.

  • Price: RRP £1,279 ($1900)

  • Ships With: Traktor Scratch Duo

  • Weight – 6.1 KG

  • Dimensions – 265 mm (W) x 403 mm (D) x 108 mm (H)

  • Key Feature: Integrated Sound Card and Support for Traktor Scratch Duo

The following text is taken from Pioneer’s promotional material

Layout mirrors TRAKTOR SCRATCH DUO 2

The DJM-T1 is not “just” a mixer; it boasts controller functions designed specifically for the included TRAKTOR SCRATCH DUO 2 software, so there is no need for an external controller. DJs get instant access to the 2 new Sample Decks, to create their own loops from live tracks, or remix and edit on the fly. Each Sample Deck gives the option of four loops or samples, for endless possibility.

Software functions such as browse, fast forward, play and rewind are also operated straight from the mixer. FX, loops, hot cues and sampling controls on the unit mirror the TRAKTOR 2 interface for intuitive operability.

Scratch control using DJ player turntables

Fully TRAKTOR SCRATCH certified and equipped with a powerful USB soundcard, so DJs just need to use the included CONTROL CD or vinyl to start operating the software’s scratch functions through their CDJs or turntables. Professional performance is further enhanced by the built in booth monitor feature.

FX

6 of TRAKTOR’s most popular and impressive tempo-synched DJ effects (Reverb, Delay, Flanger, Filter, Beatmasher, Gater) and 1 filter per deck complete the sonic weaponry, giving DJs all the tools they need to stand out from the crowd. Plus the LFO CONTROL signal output changes at beat-by-beat intervals for precision control.

Internal USB soundcard let DJs easily record sets

The onboard USB soundcard eliminates the need for an external soundcard, so DJs can connect the mixer straight to a computer with a single USB cable. That means recording live or practice sets is a breeze, as the included audio interface enables output signal switching to suit the activity, whether that is DJing, recording or producing music.

Enhanced channel fader operability and durability

The new channel faders are smoother and more durable than ever before, thanks to 2 metal shafts supporting the fader knobs. The fader is positioned to the side, minimizing damage from liquid or dust that can get inside. The DJM-T1 crossfader has an exclusive Pioneer magnetic construction that provides extreme durability, and can be used more than 10 million times, while Pioneer P-LOCK Fader Caps are impossible to pull off in the heat of a mix. The operational load, fader curve1 and cut lag2 can also be adjusted to your preference.

DJ A-Trak Explains How Serato Works

E-mail Print PDF

Jacob Ganz

This week we talked to a bunch of people about how vinyl has managed to survive, despite the fact that, technologically speaking, the format is something of an antique. One key group that helped vinyl stay alive once the public began to abandon it in favor of the CD was DJs who would spin vinyl in clubs and on the radio. But in the last decade, while younger audiences — especially indie rock fans — have started buying new music on vinyl, those DJs have largely traded in their crates of records for digital files they play through vinyl emulation software like Scratch Live, made by the New Zealand-based company Serato.

The story of Serato (and other vinyl emulation programs, like Traktor) is the story of how the leading edge of innovation always has to contend with both the practical limits of technology and the emotional and physical pull of tradition. And there's almost no one in the world better equipped to tell that story than Alain Macklovitch, the Montreal-born, Brooklyn-based DJ, producer and record label owner better known as A-Trak. Macklovitch's career has overlapped the transition from vinyl to digital DJing at every turn. He began his musical career with as close a relationship to vinyl as you can get: from the age of 12 he was a turntablist, a DJ who spins, mixes and manipulates vinyl records to produce new sounds. At 15, he was the DMC DJ...
